ADPCM
Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation is a method of encoding sound data files. It takes up less storage space than the regular PCM format used by WAV, AIFF files and CD audio.
AE
Auto Exposure. A system that automatically sets the proper exposure according to the existing light conditions. The three AE systems are: Programmed, Aperture Priority, and Shutter Priority.
AF
Auto Focus. A system that automatically adjusts the lens to keep the object in focus.
AIFF
Audio Interchange File Format developed by Apple Computer for storing high-quality sampled audio and musical instrument information. It is also used by Silicon Graphics and in several professional audio packages. Played by a variety of software on PC and Mac.
Aperture Priority
A mode in which a desired lens opening is manually selected and locked in; the camera then chooses an appropriate shutter speed for proper exposure. Used primarily to control depth of field in front of or behind a subject.
AU
A sound file format used by Sun Microsystems or other Unix computer. The Internet is dominated by Unix boxes that play sound in AU files. Fortunately, Mac and PC browsers are usually able to play AU files, which have the extension .au.
Autofocus
The lens ability to automatically focuses on a subject at which it is pointed.
AVI
Audio/Video Interleave is the file format used by Video for Windows, one of three video technologies used on PCs. The other two are MPEG and QuickTime. In AVI, picture and sound elements are stored in alternate interleaved chunks in the file.
AWB
Automatic White Balance. A system that automatically sets the white balance in today's digital cameras and camcorders.
