Cache
An Area of disk space which stores the text and graphics of a viewed Web page. When the Web page is revisited, the Web browser will retrieve the data from the cache instead of downloading it again to save time.
CCD
Charge-Coupled Device. The total sensor array that makes up the imaging surface of a digital camera. Electronic memory in which metal oxide semiconductors are arranged so the output, or charge, from one semiconductor is the input of the next semiconductor. CCDs can be charged by light or electricity. One use is for storing images in digital cameras, video cameras, and optical scanners.
CCS
Cascading Style Sheets. CCS let Web builders control the style and layout of multiple elements of one or more Web pages all at once. Before style sheets, changing an element that appeared on many pages or in several places on a single page required changing it each place it appeared. When you want to make a change with CSS, you simply change the style you previously defined, and that element is updated automatically wherever it appears. "Cascading" comes into play when you use a hierarchical order of style sheets with different levels of importance so that certain style sheets can override others.
CD-ROM
Compact Disc, Read-Only Memory. A compact disc used to store and play back computer data instead of digital audio. CD-ROMs can store up to 650 MB of data. It has become a favorite medium for huge programs.
CD-ROM drive
A computer peripheral that plays back CD-ROMs and audio CDs. It consists of a spindle that revs up the disc, a laser that flashes onto the disc's uneven surface, a prism that deflects the laser beam, and a light-sensitive diode that reads the flashing light.
CMOS
Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor. Used in some digital cameras instead of CCDs because they are inexpensive and have low power requirements.
CMYK
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. The colors that are mixed to print pictures on paper. Most ink-jet and dye-sublimation printers use combinations of these colors to reproduce images.
Codec
Coder/decoder or compression/decompression algorithm is used to encode and decode or compress and decompress various types of data such as sound and video files. Common codecs include those for converting analog video signals into compressed video files such as MPEG or analog sound signals into digitized sound such as RealAudio. Codecs can be used with either streaming live video or audio or files-based content such as AVI and WAV.
Color Wheel
The color wheel represents the relationship between colors. It can be used to select color combinations to create color schemes for your Web site. Color choice is always subjective. However, the color scheme you choose should be harmonious and driven by its appropriateness for the site's target audience and goals.
Compact Flash
A matchbook-sized memory card capable of storing up to 192MB of digital information.
Compression
Reducing digital image file sizes in the camera after they're shot, usually according to Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) specifications so more images can be stored on the memory card. The degree of compression can be user-specified on many models depending on the ultimate quality needed.
