Abbreviation for Gigabyte. It contains 1,073,741,824 bytes.
GIF
Graphics Interchange Format. A compact file format that is ideal for graphics that use only a few colors. It was once the most popular format for online color photos. Most color images and backgrounds on the Web are GIF files. The GIF format compresses images in two ways. It counts rows of like-colored pixels as a single unit, and it limits itself to indexed color. GIF images are limited to 256 colors where JPEGs can contain up to 16 million colors. CompuServe developed GIF in 1987, calling it GIF87, and a couple of years later added new features such as interlacing, transparency, and animation to create the GIF89a format.
GSM
Groupe Speciale Mobile. Global System for Mobile Communications. Standards widely used in Europe for cellular communications. The audio encoding subset of the GSM standard is best known to computer users because its data compression and decompression techniques are also being used for Web-phone communication and encoding WAV and AIFF files.
