Macro
The ability of a lens to focus just inches away from an object or subject so as to produce big close-ups, sometimes even larger-than-life size.
Manual Focus
A useful override feature on some autofocus cameras which sometimes refuse to fire when they cannot focus accurately in very low light or on fast-moving subjects.
MB
Abbreviation for megabyte. It contains 1,048,576 bytes.
Megapixel
One million pixels. When the length times width of a digicam's pixel array reaches one million, its resolution is then described in Megapixels. A megapixel image contains a million or more pixels. Megapixel images have a lot of detail and make very large files.
MOV
QuickTime multimedia technology is used to run MOV files. MOV files can be movie clips, such as Video for Windows' AVI files, or still images, such as GIFs.
MPEG
Moving Pictures Experts Group is a standard for compressing sound and movie files into an attractive format for downloading or streaming across the Internet. MPEG-1 streams video and sound data at 150 kps by taking key frames of video and filling only the areas that change between the frames. It produces acceptable video but far below that of standard TV. MPEG-2 compression improves things dramatically. With MPEG-2, a properly compressed video can be shown at near-laserdisc clarity with a CD-quality stereo soundtrack. Digital satellite services and DVD use MPEG-2.
