The "Digital Film" Standards: PCMCIA or ATA, CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, Secure Digital and xD
  Home| Contents| Digital Photography |page 4| Digital Film Standards
Digital camera uses "digital film". SanDisk is the standard bearer of CompactFlash. Lexar Media has extended the CompactFlash standard by adding an integrated USB controller into some of their cards to accompany their inexpensive new USB reader. SmartMedia is a flash media developed by Toshiba. They are a little bigger than a postage stamp, yet can hold up to 64 megabytes. SmartMedia also allows digital camera makers to design smaller, thinner cameras since the reader slot is much smaller than the comparable CompactFlash slot. Digital camera makers who have traditionally used SmartMedia, such as Agfa and Olympus, are starting to try CompactFlash in their latest offerings. Sony has created their own flash memory standard called Memory Stick. They are an almost perfect cross between the durability and capacity of CompactFlash and the compactness and cost advantage of SmartMedia.
